The nursing Ausbildung in Germany is a three-year training program that provides individuals with the knowledge and skills required to become a qualified nurse. Duales Ausbildung

There are 2 ways of studying Nursing in Germany. Either by doing a Dual Vocational Training which is known in German as ‘Duales Ausbildung’ on the other hand if you want to earn a Bachelor’s Degree you can consider a Dual study program or ‘Duales Studium’.

  • German Language at least B2 is required. As the language requirement, A1, A2 or even B1 will not suffice. Certificates from Goether, Telc, can be shown as proof.
  • Recognition of school leaving certificates (Document stating your school certificate is valid in Germany)
  • According to officials as on March 2021 as of March 2021, this is 861€. You don’t have to show a blocked account if you receive more than 861€ as stipend, else you need to.
  • You are also required to show proof of German Health Insurance as well as accommodation.

Nursing Ausbildung Training

Nursing vocational training in German is called Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann. Previously this training was focussed separately on different fields. Since January 2020, all of these are combined into a single program called ‘Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann’.

There is a theory as well as a practical part. Theory – 2100 hours, Practical – 2500 hours.

Theory takes place at a Nursing school known as ‘Pflegeschule’ and practical takes place at a training company known as ‘Ausbildungsbetrieb’. These companies can be hospitals, old age homes, health care centers etc

The program begins with an orientation course. stating what is this course all about, what are your expectations, what are the subjects that you shall learn? Etc are few aspects what you shall know in the orientation course. You shall also know different aspects of care, How to handle emotions professionally? How to talk to patients? How to talk to doctors? How to care challenged children? are some things that you shall learn in the first 2 years. This will be backed up with practical sessions too.

In the final year, you shall specialize in a particular field. These can be either Geriatric Nursing, Pediatric Nursing or General Nursing.

After 2 years, they shall conduct an intermediate exam to test your knowledge. In case if you didn’t get pass that exam, you can either continue this training or switch to a less responsible Nursing Helper training.

After your Ausbildung, you can work at a hospital, health care centres, retirement homes, recreation centres. Your working hours will be between 38 and 40 hours a week accordingly, you may need to organize your daily routine according to this. You may also require to work on weekends, holidays, at night or even work in shifts which you can compensate with a day off.

Higher study options after Ausbildung

  1. Dual Study option if you intend to obtain a Bachelor degree.

If you have worked for 3 years after Ausbildung, according to the higher studies rule in Germany, you are eligible to apply for a university admission. You need to get a company training contract at first.

  1. If you want to specialize in a particular field within Nursing, such as a Nurse Supervisor, Ward Manager or Health & Social Service Specialist, Business Economist etc you can do a Weiterbildung or Fortbildung.
  • Fortbildung intends to improve the skills required for a specific field.
  • Weiterbildung refers to short term courses available for a field

Salary

During your studies you shall receive a stipend which shall be 1160€, 1225€, 1330€ each year respectively.

Qualification: Higher the qualification, better the pay

Work Sector: Then it depends upon whether you are in public/private sector.

Specialization: Geriatric Nurses earn around 2500€. Pediatric nurse earn about 2850 €. General nurses earn about 2800€
